The Scoop On Groundhog Day

Every year on February 2nd, tons of people watch to see if we will have an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Groundhog Day is huge in Punxsutawney, a small Pennsylvania town about 85 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The event is celebrated with an entire week of various activities leading up to the long awaited weather forecast. The main character of this iconic affair is Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog, who emerges from hibernation to predict the weather. If Phil sees his shadow he retreats back into his burrow; this means six more weeks of winter. However, if Phil comes out to cloud cover and shade, he predicts we will have an early spring!

How often are Phil’s predictions accurate? Where exactly is Gobbler’s Knob? Where can you watch a live feed on Groundhog Day? These and most any other questions you may have about the event can be found on The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s website. Just click the picture below. Keep your fingers crossed for a cloudy day!
