The employees at Earth Sun Moon demonstrate their generosity through volunteering their time and talents to one another and the community in numerous ways. For the next several weeks we will share with you their stories.
Jim Highland Raises Money For St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Jim Highland, a printer at ESM, began directing the St. Jude’s 5K River Race in 2011 after his sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The site of his sister’s tumor was in an area of the brain where a lot of childhood cancers are located. Fortunately they knew a neurologist from St. Jude’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and made contact. He assisted with the surgery and it was a success! Jim relayed, “They got 100% of the malignant part and 90% of the benign. She did radiation and a cancer chemo pill; no fun, but she seems to be cancer free today.”
Jim didn’t know a lot about directing a race, only that he had a good reason for it! He has learned quite a bit in the past six years and is optimistic that the race will grow in the future. His races have been well attended through the years with approximately 40-60 participants. To date Jim has raised approximately $6,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Next year Jim is planning to encourage participants to grow their hair and donate it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides wigs for disadvantaged children with hair loss. He is already in contact with a local beautician, who has agreed to help. Jim has hopes of possibly integrating his race with another in an attempt to raise more money. He said, “The main thing will continue to be having an event that gives people the opportunity to serve others, which is more important that any amount of money.”
With the help of area businesses, his parents, children, co-workers, and friends the St. Jude’s 5K River Race has run rather smoothly over the years. Earth Sun Moon Printworks has been designing and printing the River Race shirts since the inception. Our Graphic Artist, Kelly Vatter created the t-shirt design. Businesses in our small-town of Grove City, PA donated prizes. George J. Howe Company contributed a basket with yummy treats and Dairy Queen provided certificates for ice cream. He is grateful for all of the support the community gives. Jim has a heart for helping others and wishes to inspire others to do the same.
